If you’re comfortable, you’re probably not growing

October 29, 2019

Rejection is often uncomfortable, but if you’re comfortable you’re probably not growing. Feedback, even when it feels brutal, is essential to improve.

Day 116 ❤️ Today's inspiration from Margaret A Day 116 ❤️ Today's inspiration from Margaret Atwood, and a great reminder that perfection doesn't exist, in writing or anything else. Get started, keep going, and push through.

Life, like the pottery in the slide, doesn't have to be perfect to be beautiful.

Kintsugi is a Japanese art form that involves repairing broken pottery with precious metals. The word literally translates to "to join with gold". The technique highlights the repairs instead of hiding them, emphasizing the imperfections as a unique part of the piece's design.

This updated blog is about the past but also pertains to the present. Humans have an unfortunate pattern of repeating history when we don't learn from it.

In the United States, we think of ourselves as a country of patriots devoted to democratic principles who helped win World War II. It’s certainly true our efforts helped turn the tide when we entered the war in 1941.

What we often fail to acknowledge is that U.S. policies and laws influenced Adolf Hitler:

* The Jim Crow laws of the early 20th century inspired Hitler, who tasked his lawyers to "perfect" them into what became the Nuremberg Laws, which laid the legal groundwork for the persecution of Jewish people during the Holocaust.

* Hitler was an ardent fan of the efforts of U.S. eugenicists and their work helped shape Nazi policy.

Another forgotten fact: Fascism and Nazism were on the rise here in the U.S. before we entered the war.

This blog provides additional resources -- including ones on White Christian Nationalism, which is nothing new to the United States, and the opposite of what I believe Christianity to be. There are disturbing similarities to German Nationalism in Nazi Germany, as many Christian church leaders became convinced their beliefs aligned with Nazi philosophy.

The blog is fairly short. It's the resources at the bottom that are truly important. I hope you find them of interest.

We must not forget that during World War II, too many paid the price before we turned against fascism and Nazism. Six million Jews and millions of others - including Black people who lived in Germany, Poles, the Romani, the disabled, homosexual men, political opponents (labeled as communists), and Jehovah's Witnesses, among others - perished while others cast their eyes aside.

U.S. policies and laws inspired Adolf Hitler, and the sentiments behind those policies persist to this day.

In the face of rising antisemitism, racism, fascism, extreme nationalism, and the hatred of people of different ideologies and lifestyles, it's important to recognize our own thoughts and prejudices - and to act to help those who are in harm's way.

Happy Indie Bookstore Day ✨️ - a day where we Happy Indie Bookstore Day ✨️ - a day where we cheer on the local bookstores that are the backbone of our communities.

In Arizona, The Poisoned Pen is our beloved indie bookstore in Scottsdale. Founded in 1989 by Barbara Peters, The Pen has a brilliant range of books and signed first editions and a devoted staff who love great books and the people who read them.

The Poisoned Pen schedules hundreds of book chats, book clubs, podcasts, and author events every year. Some are so large they're held offsite. Others are virtual so anyone in the world can tune in or replay on their YouTube Channel.

The Poisoned Pen hosted the launch of The Sunflower House back in November. They made my dream come true and continue to be so supportive of this book. 💛🌻💛

Wherever you are in the world, please take time to shop at your local indie bookstore. And if you're in Scottsdale, I hope you drop by The Poisoned Pen and show them some love!

I had such a great time meeting with the members o I had such a great time meeting with the members of Turtulias Book Club in Orlando about The Sunflower House -- even managed to remember to take a screenshot of their lovely faces at the end! I really appreciated the warm welcome and insightful questions. It's amazing to see how readers connect with the characters and themes of this book, and their views about Allina's acts of resistance.

Reminder that I ❤️ book clubs! You can find out more about how to invite me to yours on my website:

We have one home that all of humanity shares -- a precious blue dot in an infinite universe -- and the fate of future generations depends on what we do every day. Sounds pretty heavy, but small things can make a big difference. Picking up litter, not wasting resources, recycling, taking care of plants, animals, and each other...all these things honor our planet and make it a better place to live.

HAPPY EARTH DAY 🌎💙🙌
