THE SUNFLOWER HOUSE @stmartinspress ORDER AT LINKS BELOW 📚 author, book lover, cat mama, optimist, she/her. Repped by @victresslizz

Spring has most definitely sprung. Have been worki Spring has most definitely sprung. Have been working on finalizing my next manuscript and tomorrow's presentation at @chandlerlibrary all week, but took some time out this morning to appreciate the flowers.
Sharing this previous post from March in honor of Sharing this previous post from March in honor of Carla Hayden, an American librarian who, until May 8, served as the 14th librarian of Congress. Hayden was both the first African American and the first woman to hold this post. She was also the first professional librarian to hold the post since 1974.

Hayden began her career at the Chicago Public Library and earned a Ph.D. in library science from the University of Chicago. From 1993 until 2016, she was the CEO of Enoch Pratt Free Library in Baltimore, Maryland, and president of the American Library Association (ALA) from 2003 to 2004.

As librarian of Congress, Hayden said she hoped to continue "the movement to open the treasure chest that is the Library of Congress.”  Hayden spoke specifically of her desire to reach people in rural areas and people with visual disabilities. Another one of her main goals was to improve the infrastructure and technological capacity of the Library of Congress. In the first five years, she would also focus on making sure that at least half of the library's 162 million items were digitized, especially rare collections.

Hayden is the recipient of numerous awards, including the Librarian of the Year Award from Library Journal (1995), the Melvil Dewey Medal from the American Library Association (2017), and the History Award Medal from the Daughters of the American Revolution (2024).
